Blog Assignment 2
1) Briefly describe your internship site. Provide background information of
your agency that you work in this semester (e.g. location, services offered,
population served, etc).
All Stars Project is located at 543 West 42nd Street In New York City. Their mission is to transform the lives of youth and poor communities using the developmental power of performance in partnership with caring adults. They offer various programs for youth from ages 12-21. As well as opportunities for adults to volunteer, donate and provide resources.
2) Discuss why you chose this site and how you think it may play a role in your future career goals.
I chose this site because I plan to start my own non profit in the community I live in in the future. I though All Stars would be an excellent place to explore all the ins and outs of a non- profit and seeing as they have been going strong since the late 90's and have expanded to many other cities in the united states; I think I can learn how to run a successful one from them.
3) Describe the physical aspects of the agency site and the neighborhood surrounding site.
The location is nestled right of the path of bustling New York City. It is just close enough to times square to be exciting but also far enough to avoid the crowds. The neighborhood is Hells Kitchen so it close to any quaint shops and restaurants along with hotels and fancy high rise apartments.
4) Although you are just starting your internship describe your initial impression of the strengths and weaknesses of the agency i.e. what areas is the agency strong and in what areas are they lacking?
My initial reaction was that it was a really cool and laid back place to work. We all have desks but they are out in the open where you are easily accessible to everyone. I think that is where their strong and where they lack. Although it is very open that also means less privacy and some peoples voices carry so it can be noisy and make it hard to concentrate. However having everything so open makes it feel more like a community and you really get to know who your working with.
5) Identify the funding source(s) for this agency (i.e. state, federal etc.)
The funding comes from private donations, fundraisers, corporate sponsors and partners
6) Tell us if you think there is an opportunity for full-time work once you graduate. Why or why not?
I do think there is an opportunity because Samantha who connected me to All Stars started there as an intern from Montclair and they ended up offering her a position and she worked there for a year.

Blog Assignment 1
1) Please tell
us about yourself. For example what is the funniest thing that ever happened to
you or what about your makes you interesting?
Hi , My name is Kayla I'm 22 years old and this is my last semester for
my undergraduate degree. I'm from Jersey City, NJ and I live at home with my
mom, dad, and barely my older brother (he is never home). I don't really have a
funniest moment unless you count the cruel jokes the universe plays on me
constantly. Some interesting tidbits about me are that I like to make jewelry,
crochet, and I love cats.
2) Please tell
us your concentration. Why did you choose this concentration?
My concentration is Family Services, I chose this major because I know I
wanted to work with children but I knew I didn't want to be a teacher or
guidance counselor, but I still wanted to work with children in some capacity.
I figured Family Services would be the best way to better the lives of children
and the plus is that I will be equipped to help the whole family!
3) What is the
name of your internship site and what is your position?
I am interning at All Stars Project headquarters in NY. I am the intern
for the All Star Talent Show Network and Development School for Youth.
4) What are
your current career or graduate school plans? Or tell us if you plan to marry
rich or travel the world or whatever your can dream of!
In an ideal world I would marry rich, travel the world, and work as a
fabulously dress family Therapist who writes books. But for right now I
am thinking of applying to the Montclair and NYU counseling programs. I also
would not mind working at All Stars after my internship is over. My ultimate
down the road goal is to create my own non-profit.
5) Also, tell
us about your family - for example - are your parents married or not, do you
live with them, do you have siblings, pets etc? What is an activity you like to
share with your family? etc.
My parents have been married for 23 years and like I said before I do
still live with them. (who turns down free shelter and food, am I right??) Me
and my family love to drink together ironically. We like to have wine coolers
and beer while we watch various tv shows and make jokes.
6) Please also
write about 1 or 2 topics on the syllabus that interest you and WHY.
I am interested in the working with LGBT&Q families
because I really don't have much exposure to families and much as i have
exposure to individuals in the community. I am also really interested in the in
person class where we hear from graduates of the MSU Counseling
Psychology program because I am very interested in my higher education option.
I have so many questions about the process.
